What is ABA Therapy?

If you’ve recently gotten the recommendation to start ABA therapy from your doctor, your head might be spinning. “What exactly is ABA therapy?” “What will this look like for my child?” or “Is this the right path?” are common questions we expect you to ask.

ABA therapy helps us to understand what drives your child’s actions so we can replace moments of frustration with moments of connection. It helps them grow into their most confident selves, focusing on the practical life skills they need to thrive and using a ‘cheerleader’ approach to reinforce all the amazing things they are already capable of doing.

The Basics of ABA Therapy

ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis, which is a science-backed approach used to understand and improve behaviors. In simple terms, ABA looks at how behaviors are influenced by the environment and uses this understanding to help children learn new skills and reduce challenges. ABA works to decrease challenging behaviors and increase positive behaviors through scientific teaching and reinforcement strategies. It involves breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps, rewarding positive behaviors, and using strategies to guide learning.

The primary goal of ABA is to help children build daily living skills that promote independence and positive interactions with others. This can include learning how to communicate, following directions, managing emotions, social skills and academic abilities. ABA uses clear goals, data collection, and consistent reinforcement to track progress. Frequent adjustments are made to ensure the best outcomes for each child. Through this individualized, structured approach, ABA helps children grow in a way that is meaningful to them and supports their success in everyday life.

Why ABA Therapy Works for Kids with Autism

ABA is considered one of the leading approaches for children on the autism spectrum because it is highly individualized and focuses on teaching essential skills through positive reinforcement. Since every child with autism has unique strengths and challenges, ABA tailors strategies to each child’s needs, helping them learn and grow at their own pace. This approach has been extensively researched, modified as needed, and proven effective in promoting positive behavior and skill development. It has been proven to be one of the most impactful and beneficial therapies for individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

ABA therapy helps children improve social, communication, and learning skills by breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps and reinforcing each success. For example, a child might struggle with making eye contact during conversations. Through ABA, therapists can use gentle prompting and reward systems to encourage and teach eye contact, gradually helping the child feel more comfortable with it. This will help build confidence in the child and allow them to have effective and appropriate social interactions with peers.

A Day in the Life: What ABA Therapy Looks Like

As each child’s treatment is individualized for their specific needs, a typical ABA therapy session looks different for every child. Most sessions are a blend of structure, patience, and creativity. The therapist starts by reviewing the child’s individualized goals, which could range from learning communication skills to improving social behaviors. Each goal is broken down into smaller, manageable steps, like teaching a child to say “please” before requesting something or using pictures to help express needs.

The therapist might use a picture system or toys to engage the child in these tasks, providing clear prompts and waiting for the child to respond. If the child completes a step correctly, therapists do a wonderful job at giving positive reinforcement. Over time, these small wins build up, and the child gains confidence in their abilities and motivation to master their tasks.

There are many moments that ABA providers get to share with families, which are true joys to all involved in a child’s progress.

The Role of Parents in ABA Therapy

Parents play a crucial role in the success of ABA therapy by creating consistency for their child’s development. It is imperative for parents and/or caregivers to attend parent training meetings with their child’s Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. These meetings allow them to stay informed and educated on their child’s progress. In addition to staying informed, these meetings serve as training for parents on how to reinforce skills and strategies being learned in clinic to at home.

One of the most practical methods of parents/caregivers supporting their child includes using techniques like prompting and positive reinforcement during everyday activities, such as mealtime or playtime. Parents can also track behaviors or progress on specific goals, providing valuable insights to the BCBA.

The collaboration between parents/caregivers and therapy fosters a supportive environment for growth, ultimately enhancing the child’s development and building confidence in both the child and caregivers.

Personalized Care and Individualized Plans

ABA therapy is highly individualized, recognizing that no two children are the same. Treatment plans are tailored to each child’s unique strengths, challenges, and goals. Before beginning ABA therapy services, the child’s BCBA will conduct a detailed assessment using a variety of measures to understand the child’s behavior, communication, and learning style. From there, they write a curated plan that targets specific areas for growth, such as social skills, language, self-regulation and/or behavior reduction.

Common Misconceptions About ABA Therapy

There are myths about the effectiveness and strategies used in ABA therapy. Some people think ABA therapy is too rigid or forceful, but that’s a misunderstanding. The goal of ABA is to help children develop important skills in a positive, supportive way. It’s not about changing who they are; it’s about building on their strengths and helping them overcome challenges that impact their quality of life. ABA uses gentle techniques like praise and rewards to encourage progress. Every therapy session is tailored to each child’s needs, creating a fun, engaging environment where they can grow at their own pace. It’s all about supporting the family holistically in reaching the child’s full potential in a loving and empowering way.

How to Get Started with ABA Therapy

Before a child is recommended or qualifies for ABA therapy, they must have an autism spectrum diagnosis from a developmental pediatrician, neurologist, psychologist-D, etc. Once a child has a formalized autism spectrum diagnosis and ready to get started with ABA therapy and the following steps can be expected:

  • Research different ABA therapy companies’ websites and social media to find the style that aligns with your family.
  • Contact the organization by filling out the contact form on their website, calling or emailing to get started.
  • Once your information is received, the organization’s intake team will contact you by phone or email to arrange a tour of the clinic of interest and verify your insurance benefits.
  • Once confirmed that you want to proceed with the intake process, the clinic will schedule an assessment and send you the intake paperwork to complete.
  • Once the assessment is complete, the team will write the treatment plan and review it with you, discuss recommended hours per week and potential schedule.
  • Once the treatment plan is signed and finalized, the company will send in the request to the insurance company for authorization to begin treatment. Once authorization has been given, your child will start services!
